Loreto College has established a growing tradition of students serving as elected representatives for local communities in the UK Youth Parliament (MYPs). Lower Sixth student Samir continues this tradition as the elected MYP for Bury. The former Parrenthorn High School student shared his reflections on a recent visit to the House of Commons:

On Friday 28th of February I spoke at the UK Youth Parliament annual session in the House of Commons in London. I took the opportunity to speak about the importance of political literacy in schools and the impact on deprived areas when poorer communities are not advocated for in politics. I also questioned Dianna Johnson MP (Minister of State for Policing) and the Secretary of State for technology in an inquiry into youth violence through the effects of social media. When speaking in parliament, I felt an immense sense of pride in that young people’s views and opinions were being put forward to the government. Since being elected back in March 2024,  I’ve always tried to stand up for deprived areas across Greater Manchester as they are so often overlooked by policy makers.

After finishing at Loreto, I want to pursue a career in Law and then as a politician.
