BTEC Sport Overview

BTEC Sport qualifications enables students to become occupationally ready to take up employment in the sport sector either straight from college or after Higher Education. We offer three BTEC Sport qualifications, the Extended Diploma (3 A Level equivalent), National Diploma (2 A Level equivalent) and the Extended Certificate (1 A Level equivalent). These courses we will provide you with meaningful work experience, which relates to your chosen career.

BTEC Extended Certificate Sport (1 A level equivalent)

On the Extended Certificate programme, you will complete a total of 4 units across the 2 years.

These include:

  • Unit 1: Anatomy & Physiology
  • Unit 2: Fitness Training & Programming for Health, Sport & Wellbeing
  • Unit 3: Professional Development in the Sports Industry
  • Unit 5: Application of Fitness Testing

Assessment method:

Unit 1 – written exam, 1hr 30 minutes (33.33%)

Unit 2 – written exams 2hr 30 minutes (33.33%)

Skills

Whilst completing the BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport, you will develop a wide range of skills, that will be beneficial to your next steps into employment or Higher Education. For example, whilst studying fitness testing you will be required to complete a consultation process with a client and devise a suite of fitness tests to complete with their client and provide verbal feedback and recommendations for improvement.

In anatomy and physiology you will develop your understanding of the body’s systems and apply this understanding in an external assessment.  In fitness training and programming you will need to provide lifestyle, nutritional and training advice for a client in a synoptic assessment.

Destinations

Students progress onto a wide variety of sports related degrees, for example Sport and Exercise Science, Sports Therapy, Sports Nutrition, Sports Rehabilitation, Sports Psychology, Primary/Secondary School Teaching, Sports and Leisure Management.

It is possible to study almost every course alongside our Extended Certificate (1 A Level Equivalent)/National Diploma (2 A Level equivalent) in Sport courses, however there are some A Level/Vocational courses that are a particularly suitable match. Some of these include:

Will I do any practical work?

Yes, of course. On the Extended Certificate programme you will complete 2 Practical Assessments across the 2 years:
Year 1 - students are assessed on their planning and delivery of fitness tests on a client.
Year 2 - students are assessed on their application for and completion of a mock job interview for a sports-related career.

What kind of degree courses will I be able to do after studying Sport?
