Seven Loreto College students competed in the King Henry VIII Relay Race competition in Coventry on Wednesday, 28th January.
The students: Rowan, Theodor, Evan L, Pio, Evan H, Finlay, and Kayden are a group of runners who compete both together and against each other outside of college, some of whom run for Trafford Athletics Club. Their commitment and dedication were evident at this prestigious event, as they finished with a time of 1:14:13, just shy of the best time recorded, 1:09:05, set in 2023. They finished 6th out of 59 colleges and schools that competed – a Loreto College record, with no other students finishing this high.
Their commitment to this sport is evident in the hours they put in while full-time students at Loreto College. Two of our seven runners are studying sport at Loreto, demonstrating the range of student-athletes our college and sports courses attract.
The relay delivered an exciting showcase of speed, teamwork, and competitive spirit as athletes from multiple colleges and schools from across the country took to the track for a series of fast-paced relay races. With ideal racing conditions, the meet highlighted the depth of talent and preparation across collegiate track and field.
The competition is nationally regarded as one of the highest-level track-and-field events for student-athletes. Our Loreto students were competing against GB athletes, and some of the best runners college sport has to offer. Despite this, our students demonstrated great determination throughout the race and pushed through to earn a place in Loreto College history.
The event concluded with momentum and anticipation, as teams left the track confident and motivated. With strong performances across the board, the meet served as a reminder that relay racing is not just about speed—it’s about chemistry, discipline, and executing together when it matters most. Despite being disappointed at missing a podium finish, our students were proud to have set a college record.
A special mention must go to Pio, who ran the 6th fastest lap out of over 350 athletes who competed. He finished his lap with a time of 11:38, only 41 seconds off the top spot. This shows that we don’t just have student-athletes at Loreto College; we have ‘elite’ student-athletes.
