Celebrating Black History at Loreto College

Loreto College proudly marked Black History Month 2025 with a vibrant celebration honouring the achievements and contributions of Black British pioneers. Each faculty—including Arts and Culture, Inclusion, Social Sciences, Humanities, Computing, Maths and Physics, and Languages and Creative Media—selected an influential figure to spotlight. Staff and students collaborated to design informative and visually engaging posters, which were displayed throughout the college to inspire and educate the Loreto community. You’ll see two of the posters below.

These pioneers were chosen to reflect Black History Month’s overarching theme of Standing Firm in Power and Pride, as well as the subcategories: Power in Protest, Creativity, Courage, and Change; Pride in Our Roots; Their Service, Our History; Truth to Power; and Standing Firm in Parliament. The initiative encouraged reflection, conversation, and a deeper appreciation of Black history and culture.

To further engage staff and students, a weekly newsletter was emailed throughout October. Each edition featured:

– Highlights of activities taking place across the College

Book and film recommendations celebrating Black voices and stories

-Details of exhibitions to visit locally and nationally

Gospel Lunch special playlist of hymns and songs by Black artists, celebrating themes of faith and freedom, played in the cafeterias during lunchtime

-Competitions, including the Art & Poetry Competition themed “My God is…”

This multi-faceted celebration showcased Loreto’s commitment to inclusion, creativity, and cultural awareness, making Black History Month a meaningful experience for the entire college community.
