The Netball Team put on a dominant display in their latest North West Colleges league game, beating Ashton Sixth Form College 40-18. Loreto hosted Ashton on the 5th February.

The game started out as it ended, in Loreto’s favour, with the home side exploding out of the blocks and going 4-0 in the first few minutes. Emily Brocklebank was near perfect in at GA, only missing one goal. However, a blood injury to Loreto’s GK, Giselle Yeboah, halfway through the quarter, meant that she had to leave the court and unplanned changes had to be made to the starting line-up. This seemed to unsettle Loreto and the score finished 8-5 after the first quarter.

Team changes were made in the second quarter, which boosted Loreto and saw them pull ahead again. The attacking unit of Lydia Forster, Freya Coggins and Grace O’Shaunessy was slick and faultless, proving to be too good for the Ashton defence. At the opposite end of the court, Giselle returned to the court at GK and her partnership with Jasmine McAvoy was unstoppable, meaning that Loreto turned over numerous balls, supplying their attack with ample opportunities. The second quarter finished 18-10.

The third quarter saw more changes be made, with Daisy Shea coming on at WD and Lily Berry coming on at GS – who’s flawless performance earned her joint Coach’s POTM, shooting at 100% accuracy. Isabelle Tyler moved to GK in this quarter and made an impact straight away, shutting down the Ashton GS and gaining an incredible flying interception in the final moments of the third quarter. The quarter score finished 29-13.

The fourth and final quarter saw the team change again, with Freya moving into the unfamiliar position of GD and Grace O’Shaunessy coming back on at GS, partnering up with attacking maestro Kemi Onasanya. Loreto were in full control of the game at this point, turning over numerous balls and sinking shots from all over the shooting circle. Grace McAvoy re-entered the game at C and was sensational – her ruthless defence and quick attacking play earned her Players’ POTM. This quarter finished 40-18.

Final score: Loreto 40-18 Ashton Sixth Form College.

Squad: Giselle Yeboah, Jasmine McAvoy, Isabelle Tyler, Daisy Shea, Grace McAvoy, Lydia Forster, Kemi Onasanya, Lily Berry, Emily Brocklebank, Freya Coggins & Grace O’Shaunessy.
