Loreto College was established in 1851, inspired by Mary Ward, the founder of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary Ward was an extraordinary woman who lived in 17th-century England and dedicated her life to advocating for girls’ education at a time when it was widely viewed as unnecessary. This commitment to providing excellent education for all students, with a focus on their holistic development, is central to Loreto College’s mission and ethos. The 120 Loreto schools and colleges worldwide stand as a testament to Mary Ward’s vision and determination.
All Loreto schools and communities endeavour to live by the seven core values of Mary Ward, which are centred in God and rooted in the gospel.
These values are the foundation of all we do at Loreto College.
The Seven Loreto Values
-
- Excellence: Be ambitious for both academic excellence and human possibilities. Aim to stretch your hearts as well as minds. Focus on excellence and set the highest standards of academic and personal achievements.
- Freedom: Refer all things in your life to God; you will find inner peace and the freedom to respond creatively to the needs of others.
- Internationality: Play a part in the international network of Loreto students and colleges.
- Joy: Have an attitude of mind and disposition of heart that opens you to life; be optimistic, hopeful, courageous, open, welcoming, good-humoured and self-accepting.
- Justice:Â Be in right relationships with all created things; you will live in integrity and wholeness.
- Sincerity:Â Be such as you appear and appear such as you are.
- Truth:Â Seek for truth; reflect critically and seek answers to crucial questions.
