Vinvolved at Loreto

The Loreto Climate Change Group is working with community artist Alice Brierley to make jewellery from recycled materials and scrap. Using sustainable methods the students are also exploring traditional crafts.

“It's amazing what you can make with bits of paper, old jewellery, material, thread and imagination!” said the group's chairwoman, Megan Kenyon. “I didn't realise how much time is spent making jewellery we buy cheaply, often made abroad where the people making the items will have been paid so little.”

Group Tutor, Ann Garner invited Alia Pike from Vinvolved Green Machine to support the sessions. Vinvolved is an organisation which aims to develop students’ confidence so they feel able to volunteer for projects, events and play schemes across Manchester.

“Many of our students want to become volunteers but don't have the confidence to get involved outside college,” said Ms Garner. “These sessions enable them to meet Vinvolved staff, explore different volunteering opportunities as well as developing confidence and sharing skills with others.
