Students have been looking at how well God stands up in today’s scientific world at a special conference for theology students.
Fifty students from Loreto joined 500 others at the annual Philosophy of Religion conference in Manchester led by the legendary academic and author Dr Peter Vardy.
Mr Vaughan, who is in charge of the Theology Department at Loreto, said Dr Vardy showed encyclopaedic knowledge, discussing not only religion and philosophy but also quantum science and how this can add a whole new perspective to the concept of God and the universe.
“One of the main themes was how well belief in God stands up in a modern scientific world,” said Mr Vaughan, “Students were left enthused and inspired and were eager to meet Dr Vardy.”
Dr Vardy is Vice Principal at London University’s specialist Theology College; Heythrop. He spoke alongside Professor Alister McGrath, of King’s College, London, who has gained recognition for challenging Richard Dawkins’ book ‘The God Delusion.’
The Theology department has also arranged a trip to London in February to take 50 students to Dr Vardy’s Ethics conference.
The photos show students and Mr Vaughan and also A2 Theology student Laura Foley getting her copy of one of Dr Vardy’s books signed. Laura has applied to study Theology at Cambridge.
