Science Research

ImageImagePhysics students have been under-taking special scientific research in their own time to help their understanding of their subject.

The three upper sixth students were given Nuffield Bursary certificates and Gold Crest Awards for the four weeks of scientific investigations.

Aidan Cassidy worked at engineering company AMEC in Knutsford analysing residual radiation in the reactor. This is an important issue as shown by the fire at the Sellafield nuclear power plant in 1957 which released radiation and had to be sealed off.

Hanan Abdimalik worked at Manchester University using infrared spectroscopy to identify cancer cells in the kidney. Jaskirit Randhawa  was also at Manchester University working on research which looks at the action of radiation specific to the chemistry of water.

Head of Physics Mr Martin said all three students found the experience very enjoyable.  “It’s also helped them to develop new skills and confidence and give them an appreciation of how scientific research is undertaken,” he said.

And while these students have been working on very serious issues the physics department has also organised a talk which shows how physics can help to create fun and entertainment with a talk from the Roller Coaster Club on the engineering and technology of roller coasters.
