Inspection Success

ImageLoreto College has achieved "outstanding" status in every OFSTED category and has been described as "outstanding in every respect" by inspectors. Loreto is the first college in the country to achieve a completely outstanding profile within the current, more rigorous Ofsted framework.

The grade 1 description of "outstanding" was used thirty-five times in Loreto’s OFSTED report, the maximum that any college can achieve, to rate the facilities and services which the college provides.

Loreto is the only sixth form college in Greater Manchester to have been recognised as ‘Grade 1’ (Outstanding provision and results) by Ofsted 2010 in a range of subjects, including: Maths, Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Accounting, Business Studies, Classical Civilisation, Dance, English Language, English Literature, Film Studies, Fine Art, French, German, Graphics, Law, , Media, Photography, Physics, Product Design Psychology, Spanish, Textiles, Theatre Studies.

Overall Effectiveness: Grade 1, Outstanding.

  • ‘Loreto College is outstanding in every respect.’

Science and mathematics: Grade 1, Outstanding

Subjects offered include GCE AS and A levels in biology, chemistry, further mathematics, mathematics, physics and psychology.

Visual and performing arts, and media: Grade 1, Outstanding

A-level courses are offered in art and design, photography, textiles, graphics, 3D, film, media studies, film studies, dance, drama and music.

English, languages and culture: Grade 1, Outstanding

GCE AS and A-level courses in English Language, English Literature, English Literature & Language, French German, Spanish and Classical Civilisation.

Business, administration and law: Grade 1, Outstanding

GCE A level accounting, business studies and law.

Main findings

  • The college sets and meets very ambitious targets and all student groups attain at levels that are significantly above national comparators.

  • Students make exceptional progress during their time at college.
  • On GCE AS and A level courses success rates are very high overall.
  • Success rates are also high on vocational programmes.
  • As a result of their high attainment, students are able to apply successfully for courses which are very selective, including medicine, dentistry and physiotherapy, at high profile universities.
  • Pathways students also progress successfully to further study, employment and higher education.

The quality of provision: Grade 1, Outstanding

  • Teaching, learning and assessment are outstanding. Students speak highly of the quality of teaching and learning.
  • All staff from across the college work together coherently to support students to achieve.
  • The chaplaincy makes a strong contribution to the spiritual and social life of the college, providing guidance and support to all members of the college.
  • The college works very hard to combine options flexibly in order to meet students’ individual preferences.
  • Students make full use of an extensive enrichment programme that provides opportunities for them to extend their knowledge and life skills. These includemany recreational and team sports, a choir, college radio, creative writing,debating, and justice and peace groups.
  • Subject teachers provide a wide range of exciting and imaginative trips, visits and guest speakers. For example, geography A-level students go on a field trip to Sicily, travel and tourism students go to Barcelona and art and deign students visit New York.
  • The quality of spiritual and personal education is excellent. Students speak enthusiastically about weekly religious education (RE) lessons and tutorial sessions and the opportunities these give them to discover and appreciate each other’s cultures and religions and to contribute to the community.
  • Students participate in numerous community and charitable projects that develop their social and moral conscience.
  • The college’s contribution to the wider community is outstanding.
  • Information, advice and guidance are outstanding.

Leadership and management Grade 1

  • The college is imbued at every level with a culture of high aspirations and expectations.
  • The college makes an exceptional contribution to community cohesion.
  • The student council plays a very active role in collecting opinions and presenting findings to the college management team.
  • The college has invested significantly in specialist equipment for learners with physical disabilities.
