Model United Nations Conference

ImageImageFive Loreto students, Sara Kolber, Chloe Elliot, Lavin Othman, Anton Esmail-Yakas and Adam Stachnlewski , were delegates at the first Model UN conference for sixth form colleges at Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College in Birmingham earlier this month.

They were all excited but slightly apprehensive as they travelled down the M6 to meet over three hundred other sixth form students and their teachers for this event.

Loreto students represented Venezuela and had to lobby other countries and make alliances in order to get their resolutions to be selected for the committee stage. At this point the resolutions were debated vigorously and some approved. Our students were actively involved in issues such as:

·       The Question of a nuclear free Middle East
·       The Question of air pollution in developed countries
·       The Question of the right of the Kurdish people to self determination
·       The Question of preventing the recurrence of the global recession
·       The Question of the protection of the rights of all ethnic groups in Central Asia

Loreto’s Adam Stachnlewski received the commendation for the most ‘Original and Effective Resolution’, he was also highly commended for ‘Persuasive Speaking.’ Anton Esmail-Yakas  was commended for ‘Most Effective Lobbying.’ Well done to all who took part!
