Meet the Phil

ImageImageMusic students met the world class musicians of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at a special event at Salford’s MediaCity.

As part of the BBC’s ‘MeetThePhil’ series, students had the chance to witness a professional orchestra rehearsal atmosphere in the brand new Studios building in Salford Quays.

The Orchestra were rehearsing for a Bridgewater Hall concert and radio broadcast under the baton of world-renowned Austrian composer, H K Gruber.
Following the rehearsal, the students had a question and answer session with three of the orchestra members, questioning them on everything from their favourite composers to how they got started performing music.

ImageThey heard that the next big project for the BBC Philharmonic (which has been a secret up until now) is the recording of the BBC theme for the London Olympics 2012 - a collaboration with Manchester favourites, Elbow.

AS Music Technology students will be visiting Elbow’s Salford Studio at the start of the new year. Blueprint Studios has been Elbow’s home for the past four albums and has also recorded the likes of Justin Timberlake and Katherine Jenkins.

The visit came as music students at Loreto are awfully busy at the moment. A number of them are involved with the college musical and also performing in a number of events, including award evenings, Christmas showcases and carol services
