Loreto Theologians explore ethics – and London

Some of the students had never been to London before, and found the new experience of travelling on the tube, shopping on Oxford street, seeing Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament very exciting and fascinating.

After the sight-seeing the Loreto students went to watch Les Miserables, in which the highly emotive dramatic performances had a profound effect on many of the students, leading one student to even offer the glowing praise: ‘I know it’s all singing sir, but this is really, really good.’ In addition the show also managed to fit in with the theme of ethics and morality as the characters do the right thing regardless of the consequence.

The theology conference was held on the second day and Dr Peter Vardy, who has written more than ten theology books, was the main speaker. Dr Vardy is renowned in the subject of Theology for his philosophical and ethical theories, but despite the seriousness of the topic, which covered issues such as the morality of euthanasia, his enthusiastic and lively style had students captivated.

Students were given the opportunity to engage in the debate over the morality of euthanasia. Those who took part included Loreto students Elliot Haller, formerly of Trinity, Zameen Datta, formerly of St Peter’s and Charlie Yarwood, formerly of Moorside High, making Theology teacher Mr Vaughan ‘incredibly proud’.
