It’s been a bumper year for globe-trotting Travel and Tourism students.
As part of their two year BTEC the Travel and Tourism students have to build up a knowledge of a wide variety of attractions. So as part of the course the students have been to Spain and Holland as well as investigating the British attractions of Alton Towers, Chester and the Lake District.
One of the year’s highlight was the trip to Barcelona where students visited Gaudi’s famous unfinished church the Sagrada Familia, the Monserrat monastery and the Nou Camp football stadium.
While in Amsterdam the students toured the famous Ajax football stadium before going on to look at the Anne Frank House and the Heineken Museum.
Closer to home there was a trip to the Lake District with activities such as archery and raft building, an investigation into the historical attractions of Chester and a stomach-churning visit to Alton Towers.
A crucial part of the course is learning about the organisation involved in enabling travellers to get from A to B and in order to gain an insight into this the students visited Liverpool airport. There they met cabin crew, went on a behind-the-scenes tour and compared facilities to other airports such as Blackpool.
Head of Faculty of Care Ms Liptrot said the visits were a crucial part of the course. “Students gain from the visits and residential by the development of their team work skills, knowledge and experience of different destinations and visitor attractions and other cultures and countries,” she said. “In addition to all this they gain great grades - 100% of the students who went on the Barcelona Residential gained a Distinction for this unit.”
