Loreto students 'Takeover' for the day!

ImageImage Two Loreto Media students have been working with senior managers at Manchester City Council to shape how the city’s young people are portrayed in the media.

Nikki-Leigh Rogers and Alcione Djalo worked with the Council’s Children’s Services as part of the Children's Commissioner for England's national Take Over Day whereby young people take on key roles in prominent organisations.

One of the key tasks they worked concerned how to improve the negative portrayal of young people in the media and their ideas are now being looked at by council staff.

Mr Fordom, Head of Media Studies, said he had very positive feedback from council staff who praised the students’ confidence, ability to communicate and the well-considered responses they gave.

“We’ve been told Nikki and Alcione were a delight to work with and that council staff are aiming to let them know just before Christmas as to how they are taking their recommendations forward,” he added.

Maggie Atkinson, Children’s Commissioner for England said the Takeover Day is a brilliant opportunity for children and young people to make a difference to their schools and communities, have their voices heard and challenge the stereotypes about them that we hear too often. “Children and young people have so much to offer. They bring ideas, imagination and energy which can really make a difference to organisations.”

Around 50,000 children and young people around the country took part in Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Day.
