Loreto Students join AV debate

ImageImageLoreto students who will be voting for the first time in their lives have been finding out all about today’s referendum which could change the British voting system.

The politics and philosophy enrichment tutor organised both sides of the campaigns to come to college to raise awareness of the referendum.

All the major parties have been working hard to win the votes of young people and many of Loreto's students will be voting for the first time today in local elections in Salford, Manchester and Trafford.

But our first time voters have the added responsibility of helping decide the future of our democracy and how we elect MPs at a national level. With the first referendum in 30 years in the UK being held today it will be decided whether to scrap the current first past the post and change to av.

ImagePolitics teacher Dr Robertson commented "The class is split roughly 50-50 and not just along party lines even staff from various party colours are backing the two campaigns in some unexpected ways"

As well as finding out all about the referendum the referendum campaign lobbyists tried to get their message across by giving out balloons, placards, stickers and leaflets.
