Loreto students go Moon-walking!

ImageImageMoon-walking students have just returned from an exciting trip to sample life as an astronaut.

Maths and physics students flew off to a Space Camp in Belgium where they found out how hard life in space can be.

ImageThere were simulations to fly a space shuttle, experience zero gravity and to see what it’s like to be in constant space motion and still have to complete tasks.

“I never realised how disorienting and difficult it is to perform simple tasks in an environment like the international space station where you are constantly rotating,” said trip organiser and physics teacher Mr Martin. “Students also got to fly the space shuttle which has 2,000 buttons in the cabin and as our simulation showed it’s pretty hard to find them at the right moment!”

Another task was to build and launch a rocket which reached heights of 300 metres. Mr Martin said the Space Camp experience will help the students in their physics A2 when they will study gravity and interstellar travel.

“Students learnt so many interesting facts and got to take part in so many exciting activities it has given them a new appreciation of what is out there and the difficulties involved in exploring outside our little planet.”
