Loreto’s Cheerleading Champion

ImageImageLoreto’s champion cheerleader is off to Slovenia to take part in the European Cheerleading Championships.

Helen Shanley, who studies A levels in Economics, Maths, History and English Literature is part of a 11-strong squad which will represent the UK in the competition.

The team, who perform at Salford City Reds games, are practising their two-and- half-minute routine in preparation for the big day on July 3rd.

Helen has been cheerleading since she was 12 and says she can’t wait for the competition. But she’s keen to show that cheerleading is not as ‘fluffy’ as people imagine.

Image“People are always surprised that I’m a cheerleader as I study academic subjects such as economics and maths,” she said, “this can be frustrating but cheerleading has not only given me the chance to develop my dance skills but has allowed me to travel and meet people from around the world.”

“We’re hoping to at least come in the top five. Our routines are very energetic influenced by jazz dance moves with lots of springs and jumps so hopefully that will appeal to the judges.”

Helen has just finished her AS exams and is aiming to go to university next year where she’s hoping to continue her cheerleading interests.
