Helena Kennedy Awards

Oluwabunmi Ajomo and Liam Russell joined over a hundred students gathered for the Helena Kennedy Foundation awards ceremony to recognise their academic success against the odds.

Both students are now studying in higher education with Oluwabunmi Ajomo studying psychology at University of Salford and Liam Russell at University of Nottingham where he is studying Philosophy.

The Principal said “I am pleased that Oluwabunmi’s and Liam’s innate talent, combined with hard work and determination, have been recognised through the Helena Kennedy Awards. They have shown that adversity is no barrier to achievement and progress. I know that they will show the same tenacity at university and beyond. Well done.”

The Helena Kennedy Foundation offers financial and emotional assistance to help disadvantaged students overcome personal or financial obstacles in the form of bursaries, mentoring and work placements.

Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, President of the Foundation said: “I am delighted to have presented these students with one of our awards in recognition of their huge achievements in reaching university. Each student who receives an award has been selected because they are special and have shown real talent and determination."

The 2011 award winners were awarded a £1500 bursary to support their costs while studying as well as the ongoing training, mentoring and guidance provided by the Foundation.  The Foundation has seen 96% of its award winners successfully graduate, a significant figure which outstrips the national completion rate.
