General Studies

Generally students who have a good GCSE profile are afforded the opportunity to take this subject. It is linked to all subjects as students have to examine a range of issues from the sciences , social sciences, arts & humanities. It enables students to develop their critical thinking, analytical & evaluative  skills  and so is useful to all students who wish to pursue careers in all fields from scientific research, medicine, law, the police, teaching, nursing, the armed forces, business, etc.

Unit 1: 

Brief description of Unit 1: In the social domain students will debate issues from congestion charging to the privatisation of the national health service to the wages of footballers. In the cultural domain students will discuss issues such as euthanasia, animal rights, indoctrination, faith, the corruption of the media & the role of the arts.

Unit 2: 

Brief description of Unit 2: In the scientific domain students will debate a range of  issues from global warming to space exploration, to genetic engineering, as well as reviewing some mathematical skills.
