Loreto College Football 2010-2011 Season

This season has seen a number of firsts for Loreto College. Three teams competed in various affiliated leagues. This year the First team won the North West South Division 1 League beating highly skilled and competitive colleges such as Aquinas, Xavarian and Sir John Deane from across the region to top the league. The Second team also won the North West South Division League 2 and the Third team came runners up in the British College Sports North West League.

Wayne Pybus, the head coach of the first team, commented: “The team spirit has been the big difference this season coupled with some excellent team and individual performances”.

This week the First Team will play in the League Play-off Final of the North West Colleges’ Champions Cup. To reach the final the successful college first team had to beat teams from the North West North League Division 1. In last week’s semi final, the first team convincingly beat Ashton Sixth Form College 3 – 1 which secured their place in the final against Sir John Deane. The final will be played on Wednesday 18th May at Mayfield Sports Centre Rochdale (kick off 4pm).

Individual performances this season come no better than that of Fabio Abreu who was selected to play for the England U18’s School Boys Team, this is another first for the college. Fabio played in Spain, Poland, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. He was awarded “Man of the Match” in the last game against Northern Ireland which was played in April and shown live on Sky Sports T.V. Loreto College and Greater Manchester County teams were both mentioned live on air during this game.

Another first for Loreto saw Wayne Pybus become the North West College County Select Team Coach. Loreto have seven players represent the College in the County team. The County Team has achieved great success: it came top of their league beating Merseyside, Humberside, Cheshire and Lancashire.

It has been an immensely successful season for all the college football teams and with luck and determination the first team will add another trophy to their tally in the Final this Wednesday.
