Brief description of Unit 1: This module teaches you how to analyse how films work, by giving you the skills to pull films apart. You will be taught how filmmakers use cinematic techniques to make their films interesting to the audiences. During this module you will study a range of films and submit an analysis of a film of your choice as part of your coursework. The second part of this module is more practical, it has you showing your understanding of how films work, with you producing a photographic storyboard using equipment provided by Loreto College. You will also assess how effective your work was as part of the process.

Brief description of Unit 2: This wide ranging module aims to explore how British and American cinema work. Where the first module explores the nuts and bolts of how camerawork and sound and the like work, this module explores how British and American cinema work with certain styles of films, or genres. We also look at the different ways films can tell stories through their narratives and how different groups of people can be represented. We consider the ways that producers of both British and American films choose which films to make, which stars to employ, how they market the films to get audiences interested, and the different ways people watch films today. We will do close studies of both British and American films, as well as analysing marketing materials like film trailers, posters, internet sites and box office data.
