Classical Civilisation students visit The Lowry

ImageImageClassical Civilisation students enjoyed an exciting trip to the Lowry Theatre focusing upon a Greek Tragedy.

The students went to see a dramatic production of Medea.

Euripides's classic tragedy was first performed in Athens in 431 BC and tells the tale of a wife spurned by her husband who is consumed by hatred and a bottomless desire for revenge.

Medea was the daughter of the King of Colchis where her attraction to the Greek hero Jason – of Argonauts fame - led her to help him outwit her father so he could take the legendary Golden Fleece.

Although she struggles to gain acceptance by the Corinthians, who regard her as a barbarian, she is a devoted wife who has borne her husband two sons. But Jason runs off with King Creon's daughter, Glauce, and she is driven mad with rage. As a result Medea uses all her powers of magic to exact a horrifying revenge.

The students were taken to the play by Classics teachers Ms Drumm and Mrs Bloom. Students thought the production was “dead exciting” and the way it was performed gave them a “new perspective” on the play.
