Chemists at Loreto have been seeing how they could use their lab skills in the world of work.
Not only have they been separating and analysing the active ingredient from a pharmaceutical drug at the University of Liverpool but they have visited the world-class research labs at AstraZeneca.
In the chemistry master-class at Liverpool students built on the practical and theoretical skills they have learnt in AS chemistry and were introduced to new concepts relevant for their A2.
“Students were allowed to work individually and enjoyed the day applying skills from their chemistry lessons and really saw the relevance of the work they were undertaking,” said chemistry teacher Mr Fielding.
“They worked with the most up-to-date equipment and got to discuss university courses and social lives with recently graduated chemistry students, which was all really helpful.”
It follows on from an earlier visit to the pharmaceutical company, AstraZeneca, near Alderley Edge. There students visited the labs, learnt about how new drugs are discovered and heard about possible careers they could go into if they choose to study chemistry at university.
