Chemistry in Action

ImageImageA trip to a brewery meant Loreto chemistry students had the opportunity to see their subject in action.

Chemistry students from Loreto College visited the neighbouring Hyde Brewery to help in their study of the fermentation process. Fermentation is the conversion of a carbohydrate, such as sugar, into an acid or an alcohol.

Fermentation is a key part of the AS syllabus and Head of  Chemistry Mrs Winn said it was great for students to see the process working at the brewery.

Mrs Winn said the visit was a great success and showed students how important chemistry is, not just in the lab, but out in the real world.

"The brewery is very close to Loreto,” she said, “so it is an ideal opportunity to show students how chemistry is used in industry and the world of work,” she added.

Hydes BImagerewery is still owned and managed as a family business and has been running for almost 150 years.
