Charities week at Loreto

It’s hoped a Loreto College charity bonanza is raising thousands for Sports Relief and to help the earthquake effort in Haiti.

Students have run numerous events for Haiti including radio programmes, hand-made chocolate egg raffle, lucky dips, cake sales and even wore a wide variety of hats and wigs.  A special fundraising showcase has brought in even more money.

Students and staff in College decided to don silly hats and wigs, or style their hair in return for a small donation to help to raise money towards the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. Students and staff sporting the head gear of police officers, cowgirls and boys, carnival queens and some, quite frankly, unidentifiable items were seen roaming the corridors of Loreto on the final day of Charities Week.

All agreed it was worthwhile to look a little ridiculous for a few hours to help raise money for such a worthwhile cause. To date students have raised £4647 for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.

Meanwhile 160 energetic students and staff clocked up 298 miles for Sports Relief: the equivalent of running from Manchester to London and then from London to Birmingham!

In total we had 160 students and staff completing the 3000 metre run at Sports City and at the college’s sports field. That is a total of 480000 metres! Mr Adams and Mr Armstrong ran the 3000 metres at Sports City and then ran to college and ran the 3000 metres at college as well (Mr Armstrong won the race, not that they were racing or competitive!)
Charity Week organiser Ms Seddon said she was delighted with the efforts.

“The huge number of students who participated in the Sports Relief, wore a hat or even just bought a cake just shows how caring Loreto College is,” she said.

Other fundraising efforts included a sponsored walk by Health and Social care students, Assistant Principal Mr McCann swimming over 90 lengths and Biology teacher Mr Foulder is having a sponsored hair cut to raise extra funds. This year, Loreto students have also raised a total of £3129.50 for the Study Aid Challenge!
