Car washing for charity

ImageImageStudents and staff have been using elbow grease to raise hundreds of pounds to help pupils from its sister school in India attend World Youth Day in Spain.

The charity car wash raised £300 and together with a donation from the RE department it will help sponsor two  pupils at the Loreto school in Entally, Kolkata, India to travel to the international event in Madrid this summer.

“World Youth Day is an enormous Catholic festival led by the Holy Father (Pope Benedict XVI) and a great experience for thousands of young Catholics to gather in one place for a few days,” said Loreto College chaplain Richard Howard.

“This will be an incredible experience for all who attend and especially for these children who might not otherwise get the opportunity.’’

World Youth Day takes place from August 16th to 21st and more than 340,000 young Catholics from over 170 countries have registered to attend.

Almost all the main events will be presided over by the Pope and on August 18th, there will be a Welcome Ceremony for His Holiness. Other events include processions, prayer vigils and cultural highlights at Madrid’s main landmarks and museums. Young people will have the chance to meet other Catholics like them and to meet with bishops from all around the world.

The Loreto sisters have schools all around the world as far away as Peru, Australia and Uganda and aim to educate all young people of all cultures, faiths and social class.
