What is Biology?

Biology A-level provides an opportunity to gain a sound understanding of this subject through the study of fundamental Biological principles, whilst exploring modern applications of Biology.  The course provides an appropriate foundation for further study of Biology or related subjects in higher education.  In addition, it provides a worthwhile course for candidates of various ages and from diverse backgrounds in terms of general education and lifelong learning. 

 

Who does this subject…?
  • Anyone interested in Biology or wishing to study Marine Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Physiology, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Animal Behaviour, Pharmacology or Zoology at University.
  • Biology AS is essential for all students wishing to pursue a career in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy.  
  • Biology develops and enhances manipulative and logical thinking skills, as well as the ability to analyse, interpret, evaluate and communicate well.  
  • The Biology course is designed to link with the current GCSE science syllabus and allows students to progress to University for the majority of courses available.

Length: 
Level 3 one year course, 4 Periods a week
Unit 1: 

Brief description of Unit 1: The BY1 unit looks at the structure and function of biological compounds such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats and enzymes.  Cells are looked at in detail, including: cell structure, membranes and movement of materials in and out of cells.  At the end of the unit normal cell division is studied in detail along with the basic structures of DNA and RNA molecules.  

Unit 2: 
 
The BY2 unit covers a range of topics, including classification and elevation, the structure of gas exchange and transport systems and why they are needed, Asexual and sexual reproduction in plants and animals is studied, followed by nutrition and digestion.
 
Unit 3:
 
Brief description of Unit 3: The practical exam will be set and carried out during lesson time and once completed it will be marked externally by the exam board.  The experimental work may involve, for example carrying out an enzyme or water potential practical.  Students will also be expected to carry out low power microscopy work using prepared slides.
 
 
What the department specifically offers that is noteworthy...: 
  • Biology lessons are taught in newly built state of the art labs which all have data projectors.
  • The vast majority of students have successfully gone on to study Biology related degrees at top universities including Oxford and Cambridge.  
  • Medlink and Vetlink support students going on to study Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.
  • As part of an enrichment programme, our students, along with other science students, are given the opportunity to take part in the Science Club where they can carry out exciting activities.  
  • Additional student support is offered through supplementary, study skills and revision sessions.
  • Students enjoy relevant lectures given by eminent Scientists and the Medical Profession and Manchester Literary & Philosophical Society.
