Beethoven at the Bridgewater Hall

ImageImageOn Saturday 29 January, the AS Music group enjoyed an evening at the Bridgewater Hall to hear the Manchester Camerata perform Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Students were invited to attend the concert following a project run by musicians from the Camerata earlier in the year.

The concert opened with a Beethoven string quartet and was followed by the rousing 9th Symphony. Composed in 1824, Beethoven’s masterpiece was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony. The students found the performance a powerful experience, particularly the energetic 4th movement, with its complex musical texture and structure.

This was the first time that some of the students had been to the Bridgewater Hall.  James Casulli a former St Philip Howard pupil said, “It was fantastic, I really enjoyed it” and Annie Lord previously from St Ambrose Barlow commented that “It was a great experience to hear a live concert performed by professional musicians.” Music teacher, Mrs Shapey said “It was a pleasure to take the AS group to this concert and the Head of Education for Manchester Camerata, Nick Ponsillo said how delighted he was that the students had made the effort to attend.”
