The American Dream...

Jonathan Paito, who is studying AS history at Loreto College, came first in the British Association of American Studies (BAAS) Schools' Essay Prize. As well as a certificate to mark the achievement Jonathan was also given £250 by the BAAS which promotes the study of the US in schools, colleges and universities.

“For students like Jonathan the BAAS prize offers an opportunity to show their interest in and knowledge of the US beyond their academic studies, said Head of History, Ms Cooper.

“Jonathan is very good at history,” she added, “getting full marks in his January exam which focused on the USA from 1890 to1945.”  Jonathan is also studying AS French, Economics and English Literature and is the second Loreto history student to win the prize.

The association was looking for essays that explored any aspect of the American experience, from the perspective of history, literature, film or politics. Jonathan’s essay focused on the American dream which can be seen as the national ethos of the United States in which democratic ideals are perceived to deliver a promise of prosperity to all people.
